An informative explanation of Reiki, its history, uses and what to expect when you receive a Reiki treatment.

Reiki (pronounced ‘ray key’) is an ancient form of energy work that is both subtle and powerful. Its actions are similar to acupuncture, though there are no needles involved. Reiki has been used to expedite the healing of broken bones, alleviate pain, and much more. Reiki is swiftly growing in popularity as more and more people learn of its profound benefits. Although Reiki is slightly new to the United States, many hospitals are now incorporating optional Reiki treatments for their patients with very positive results.

History of Reiki

For hundreds of years knowledge of Reiki had been hidden. Though its true origins remain unknown, Reiki has been used in Japan and more recently in the United States and Europe. In the early 20th century a monk named Dr. Mikao Usui rediscovered the concept and practice of Reiki and put it into immediate use. At first he used it to help the poor and homeless but it soon became clear that everyone could appreciate this balancing and healing Reiki energy. Eventually, he set up a school in Japan where his students learned Reiki and how to pass the knowledge on to others. One of his students, Hawayo Takata, brought Reiki to Hawaii in 1937 where knowledge of it quickly passed to the rest of the United States.

Reiki and Spirituality

Though there is no religion directly connected to Reiki, it is a deeply spiritual process. Both the practitioner and the client are filled with Reiki energy which is also referred to as universal energy. People always have this energy in them and around them yet during a Reiki treatment this energy is increased, directed and unblocks energy channels within the body. The energy channels are often called chakras. Each chakra is associated with certain aspects of a person’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual body.

Reiki Treatments

Reiki treatments can have long lasting benefits but it is also the client’s responsibility to themselves to try and maintain a healthy lifestyle. This will help the client to feel better between treatments. Generally, someone will go for a Reiki treatment when he feels stressed, run down or if he is feeling any physical or emotional blockages. In today’s fast paced world, this often means that the average length of time between treatments is one month.

Getting a Reiki treatment is a simple process where the client simply lays on a massage table, fully clothed except for shoes, while the practitioner lightly places his hands over key points of the client’s body. These points include the chakras but others are often added including the eyes, ears, jaw and memory points which are located at the base of the skull. Reiki treatments last for an hour to an hour and a half. During the treatment you may or may not feel the Reiki energy at first, but after a few treatments, most clients begin to notice either a feeling of heat or a mild tingling in the area being worked on. After the treatment the client will often feel a deep peace, very relaxed and a sense of well-being. Although Reiki is not a cure for any conditions, many clients feel relief from pain, stress and fatigue.

The Reiki Practitioner’s Exprience

The practitioner experiences the Reiki energy mostly in her hands and arms. Blockages in the client’s energy can be felt by the practitioner. Though the practitioner can feel subtle changes in the energy and can have insights that may help the client, the Reiki energy is actually the one doing the work. The practitioner channels the energy into the client where the energy works to gently unblock the chakras. If the client or the practitioner feel that other areas need work, like a weak knee or a sore elbow, time can be spent on those areas as well. Reiki practitioners are also trained to be able to send Reiki energy over long distances. Long distance Reiki feels much the same as in office Reiki except without the calming environment of a Reiki office. When receiving long distance Reiki be sure to turn off phones, television and other distractions so that you can fully appreciate the peaceful and healing Reiki energy.

Reiki can have profound and lasting benefits yet it is an extremely gentle form of energy work. It makes a wonderful addition to conventional therapies. Reiki can be taught to anyone and, once learned, can be used at any time. It is one of the most versatile, practical and beneficial ways to promote healing and wellness.
